Due to the teaching assistant strike at York, all University activities are effectively suspended until an agreement has been reached.

Currently, we are not aware how long the University will be on strike, however, if you are interested the York University Website has a ton of information on the negotiation process.

We look forward to seeing you all after the strike!

Iraqi Orphan Campaign, Volunteers Needed

E-mail Print PDF

Assalamun Alaikum

Dear Members,

We regret to inform you that last week, the TMA office was one of three offices in the student centre that were struck by robbers. Unfortunately, the majority of the money that was taken from the office was collected for the Iraqi Orphans throughout the course of the year thus far.

In order to counter this tragedy, the TMA, along with other organizations on Campus, are backing a university wide campaign to raise awareness and funds for the Iraqi Orphans. The campaign will include tabling sessions at vari hall, a visual campaign later on in the week, a dinner/speech (in early November), as well as many other initiatives to raise funds for this humanitarian cause.

Shahbaz Mir, president of Thaqalayn Muslim Association, talks to Toronto police after robbery.

Two student organizations in York’s Student Centre have been hit by thefts similar in nature. On Thursday, Oct. 2, the Thaqalayn Muslim Association (TMA) discovered that the funds they were collecting for orphans in Iraq were stolen from their office. Three days later, the Iranian Students Association at York University (ISAYU) also found their office ransacked and all of their in-office funds – around $300 – missing. “The money we have raised is no ordinary money. We have been fundraising over the summer, and [ . . . ] we’ve been trying to raise money for the Iraq orphans,” said TMA president Shahbaz Mir.
